Welcome to the first installment of our new series: The Good, The Bad, and The Pugly. In this and upcoming posts, we’ll be going over examples of good design, bad design, and ending it all with a sampling of the cutest ugly dogs in the world, pugs! Why? Do you really need a reason to look at adorable photos of pugs? Of course not.

As expert contractors and big fans of interior design, we enjoy following all of the great ideas that pop up on the regular over at House Beautiful. We particularly love the design tips and tricks they’ve offered in this article about kitchen design mistakes. Making a kitchen both functional and stylish can be a difficult thing to do, but House Beautiful’s advice from expert designers will help you easily avoid some of the most common bungles.

The Good

House Beautiful

One of our favorite tips from House Beautiful is simple but oh so important: “Don’t be boring.” Kitchens are especially prone to falling into the trap of dullness, since the main priority of that area is practicality. But there’s certainly a way to keep things interesting without compromising the efficiency of the space. You can get creative when it comes to almost any element, just like designer Mick De Giulio did with this gorgeous converted barn kitchen. The farm theme is maintained by using chicken wire in the cupboards, keeping the horse stall frames in tact, and placing reclaimed barnwood down for rustic flooring.

The Bad

Remodel Aholic

When it comes to a fun and character-full kitchen, House Beautiful’s example is hard to beat, but on the opposite end, it’s not so hard to find examples of boring kitchens all over the web. We’ve found the photo above, which we think perfectly showcases how a clean, collected kitchen can still be utterly drab. The gray-blue and white tones are a bit too sterile, and the decorative pieces atop the cabinets fail to introduce personality to the space. Luckily, the homeowner actually remodeled this kitchen for these very reasons. You can see the lovely results here at Remodel Aholic.
